Chances are, if you're reading this, you have a dog as part of your family. Finding someone to care for your dog isn't as easy as it sounds, and there isn't much information out there to help you choose the right person. We do tons of research when it comes to our kids, choosing a holiday destination, buying a new car... so why not for our dogs? It's not as simple as asking in a Facebook group; you could end up with anyone unless you know what you're looking for. I've put together some tips & advice for when it comes to choosing the right person to look after your dog, including pet sitting services.
1. Can You Meet Them?
A good, professional dog carer offering pet sitting services should be happy to meet you and your dog first — in fact, they should insist this happens before committing to anything. It’s a chance for you all to meet, run through your dog's details, necessary paperwork, and arrangements, and for you to ask any questions. It's also the best opportunity to see how both your dog and the carer interact and to determine if they are the right fit. I always book a Meet & Greet session before committing to any bookings, and I like to see how you walk your dog, if that's part of the service you're looking for.
2. Are Pet Sitting Services Insured?
It is so important for a professional dog carer, especially those offering pet sitting services, to have insurance to protect all parties — the carer, your dog, and the public. If your carer is walking your dog and using their vehicle, this must also be insured to carry animals. I am comprehensively insured with Protectivity, and my vehicle is covered with LV for business use.
3. What Qualifications Do You Have?
I highly recommend choosing a carer who is Canine First Aid trained, especially when they offer pet sitting services. While the first instinct is to get to a vet ASAP, if your carer is out and far from their vehicle, it’s important for them to know how to handle emergencies. Knowledge in areas like canine anxiety, communication, and nutrition is also a bonus. I am Canine First Aid trained and always carry a basic first aid kit with me, with a more comprehensive kit in my car. I also use a tracking app to send you and my emergency contacts my location in case of an emergency. Additionally, I’m trained in canine nutrition and am studying canine anxiety.
4. Are You DBS Checked?
A DBS check is often associated with working with children or vulnerable adults, but it’s just as relevant when hiring someone for pet sitting services. This check ensures that the person caring for your dog, especially if they're entering your home, has no criminal convictions. I have a current DBS certificate, and you can ask to see this at any time.
5. Are You GDPR Compliant?
GDPR, or General Data Protection Regulation, is law for any business handling personal data, including those offering pet sitting services. Your personal data must be securely stored, either in a lockable cabinet or on a protected server. I store personal data on a secure, password-protected online server and keep it only for as long as I provide services to you. I use this data solely for service purposes and will never share it with third parties.
6. What are Your T&C's?
Professional dog carers, including those providing pet sitting services, should have clear Terms & Conditions. These should outline both parties' obligations. Ensure you read their terms thoroughly and ask any questions. My T&C's are available here, and a link is provided on each invoice you receive. I aim to cover all eventualities to ensure clarity and security for you and your dog.
7. How Much Do You Charge?
While budget is important, it shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing a dog carer offering pet sitting services. Consider factors like the time they spend with your dog, transit time, included treats, safety, and their qualifications. I believe my prices are fair and reflect the quality care and attention I give to every dog. My prices include treats and poo bags, and I offer advice and support beyond just walking or sitting your dog. My prices can be found here.
8. Does My Dog Need To Be Vaccinated?
Vaccination requirements vary depending on the services you need. However, any responsible dog carer offering group walks, day care, or home boarding should require dogs to be fully vaccinated to minimize the spread of disease. For my pet sitting services, I require all dogs in group walks to be fully vaccinated, and I strongly advise keeping vaccinations up to date for your dog's safety and the safety of others.
9. Does My Dog Need To Be Treated For Parasites?
Regardless of the pet sitting services you require, your dog should be regularly treated for parasites like fleas, ticks, and worms. This not only protects your dog but also prevents the spread of parasites to other pets and homes. My T&C’s require that your dog is up to date on parasite treatments, and I ask that you inform me immediately if you discover any parasites on your dog.
10. What Do You Do In An Emergency?
A professional dog carer providing pet sitting services should be prepared for emergencies, whether it’s an injury, illness, or unexpected changes in behavior. The carer should have emergency contact details, as well as a backup vet in case your usual one is unavailable. I always have emergency contacts and contingency plans in place, including an alternate vet surgery if needed.
In addition to these questions, it’s important to check references, reviews, and social media presence. If a carer isn't on social media, it’s worth questioning why. Following a few posts and comments from clients can provide insight into their services. I always trust my gut, and I encourage you to do the same—if something feels off, it probably is. Don’t hesitate to see a few carers before making your final choice.
